Webinar: World Trauma Day

October 17, 2020 |

World Trauma Day is celebrated annually on October 17th. The day marks the increasing rate of accidents and injuries causing death and disability across the world and the need to prevent them. On this occasion, SDC Foundation organized a special webinar session with Dr. Mahesh Kuriyal, Consultant – Neurosurgeon, MD, Combined Medical Institute, Dehradun and Dr. Madhur Uniyal, Assistant Professor, Trauma Surgery, AIIMS Rishikesh. The discussion was moderated by SDC Founder Anoop Nautiyal.

Dr. Kuriyal and Dr. Uniyal highlighted the reasons for increasing road accidents in the state and response to such cases. Both experts shared case studies and recommendations to strengthen the trauma system in Uttarakhand.

Dr. Kuriyal emphasized that 80% of road accidents and related deaths can be prevented through individual responsibility for safety, strict adherence to traffic rules, and improved compliance with wearing helmets and seatbelts, along with curbing overspeeding. India, with just one percent of the world's vehicles, witnesses 10 percent of global road accidents. This is a particularly significant challenge for Uttarakhand.

Dr. Uniyal stressed the need for air ambulance systems in Uttarakhand considering the frequent cases of trauma, maternal mortality and heart attacks in the hill state. He also linked the frequent disasters and rapidly increasing numbers of tourists and pilgrims as reasons why there is a dire need for efficient air ambulance services.
