SDC organised an enriching roundtable to discuss the implementation of the plastic ban in Uttarakhand. Government officials from the Urban Development Directorate, Pollution Control Board and UNDP India along with citizen leaders, civil society workers from Waste Warriors and Pramukh, and independent researchers engaged in the dialogue.
The dialogue yielded several key takeaways. First and foremost, all participants agreed that there was a need for robust action from the state government and its various authorities. It is also necessary to establish accountability of brand owners and large producers in line with principles of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Several participants also stressed on the need for citizens to adopt sustainable practices.
SDC conveys a special thanks to Rawat Ji who has been running a vegetable shop in the Vasant Vihar area in Dehradun for the last 40 years! He shared a completely different perspective on the issue of plastic waste management.
