‘Plastic Mukt Mussoorie’ is a joint project by the global giant, Nestle India and Dehradun based environmental action and advocacy group, Social Development for Communities (SDC) Foundation. The project caters to more than 200 Maggi Points situated on Dehradun to Mussoorie Highway, alongside the picturesque, Doon Valley. A well equipped ‘Plastic Express’ is engaged in the routine pickup of segregated plastic waste from these Maggi Points. The Plastic Express is responsible for making the Maggi Point owners/operators segregate their waste, store them separately and transport it to Dry Waste Collection Centre (Mussoorie Nagar Palika) for scientific recycling. The Express has been able to collect more than 8000 kilograms of single-use plastic waste from these Maggi points and has diverted it from the landfills. Plastic Mukt Mussoorie is an example of a localized Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) solution, a principle embodied under the Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016.
