We’re thrilled to announce that SDC Foundation has partnered with the newly constructed Mall of Dehradun by Pacific Group in Dehradun, marking this our 225th Plastic Bank location!
This landmark mall, opened in June 2024, is not only Uttarakhand’s largest but also a leader in sustainability with its LEED green building certification, a 600-kilowatt solar plant, and advanced water management systems. This partnership is a significant step forward, supporting our shared commitment to sustainable practices and eco-conscious development.
The Plastic Bank Project, a collaboration with Airbus India, is a citizen-led initiative aimed at fostering a sustainable mindset in the Dehradun region through awareness, plastic waste segregation, and behavior change. Plastic Banks act as designated collection points for plastic waste, and over the past year, they’ve become a city-wide movement involving over 90,000 people.
We’re focused on working with schools, restaurants (Maggi Points), hostels, universities, retail outlets, hospitals and apartment complexes to promote segregation and responsible collection of plastic waste. Currently, most of our Plastic Banks are located in city based schools where more than 35,000 students are empowered to lead the charge in building a cleaner, greener future.
The segregated and collected plastic waste is transported to our Plastic Waste Segregation & Learning Center, where it is sorted once again for recycling and repurposing. By supporting the principles of a circular economy, this process reduces litter, minimizes pressure on open spaces, and diverts plastic away from landfills across the city. Our goal is to set up 300 Plastic Banks across Dehradun by March 2025, with plans to establish 70-80 more over the next five months.
Beyond immediate waste management benefits, the Plastic Bank Project is also a preparation for Swachh Survekshan, the nationwide cleanliness competition, demonstrating our city’s commitment to cleanliness and environmental sustainability.
SDC's vision is perfectly aligned with the sustainable infrastructure of the Mall of Dehradun, whose LEED-certified design showcases how responsible building practices can reduce environmental impact.
Thus, this collaboration between us and the Mall of Dehradun exemplifies the power of community-driven environmental change. By involving retailers and brands, local citizens, institutions, and businesses, we’re turning awareness into action and creating an impact across Dehradun. Together, with community support, we’re building a greener Uttarakhand, one Plastic Bank at a time.
On this note, Team SDC wishes you all a very Happy Diwali!
