This World Environment Day (June 5th 2024), SDC joined hands with the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) as partners for the Plastic Mukt Nadi Abhiyan. The Abhiyan aimed to educate and mobilise communities along the river Ganga about the perils of plastic waste, with the help of a team of motivated individuals and volunteers, known as Ganga Prahiris.
Ganga Prahiris (https://nmcg.nic.in/wii/prgbggp.aspx), also known as Guardians of the Ganga, is a collaborative effort under the National Mission for Clean Ganga-Wildlife Institute of India (NMCG-WII) project ‘Biodiversity Conservation and Ganga Rejuvenation’, that involves members of the local community as volunteers to maintain the river’s Aviral and Nirmal Dhara.
We are grateful to all the Ganga Prahiris who collected plastic waste from along the river banks and sent it to our Plastic Waste Segregation & Learning Centre in Mehuwala, Dehradun. Further, we hosted the WII team for an informative session at our center.
